Music In Us

My name is Ellen Whyte, and I was asked to write a summary of my experience at Ackerman Academy.
I was invited to participate in their artist in residency program from January - March 2013.  Ackerman is an alternative school offering a unique atmosphere,  established  for students  who don't necessarily fit into a conventional model of education.  In addition to some traditional subject matter,  Ackerman offers a wide array of subject matter covering "real life" experience.
My role was to  involve the students with what I love to do most.. write and perform music! I'm a singer/songwriter, and in addition to songwriting,  the students learned about the history and geography of  blues music.  Students were also  introduced to the genre with multiple examples of the blues masters who popularized  blues music during the late nineteenth century  up through modern times.  I introduced the class to my friend, Dave Mullany, who demonstrated a variety of blues styles on guitar.
The next segment of the blues program was for the students to collaborate with me and write 3 songs for  the performance.  The creativity was evidenced in how well the students worked out their ideas by editing, re-writing, and putting the finishing touches on each song.  The songs were:  "Blue Dreams," a song about what happens when we dream; "Wild Fire," a zesty song about love; and "Ackerman Blues," telling their story about their school.
In the last 2 weeks of dress rehearsals, we had to work together to  channel the nervousness,  build group self confidence, and work on individual self-esteem issues.  My goal was for every student to enjoy the sweet taste of success!  The experience culminated in a public performance by the students on March 14, 2013 at "The Place To Be" coffee house in Canby, Oregon
The night of the performance is where these "diamonds in the rough" showed up to shine! It was magical as one miracle after the next unfolded! The students not only performed their original class songs , but also their own original compositions, read poetry, and performed their own versions of popular cover tunes.  The crowd was incredibly supportive and showed their excitement for the students'  performances with each song. It was standing room only.  This event  brought a community of people together who believe in each other.  It was inspiring for me to see that connection.
The last day of my school experience was bittersweet. I became very attached to my students and it was hard to say goodbye.
Here's what the students had to say about their experience:
"This has by far been the best experience of my high school career and as a musician."
"Thanks, Ellen for all the commitment, love, support, patience, time given, musical talents, trust, knowledge, guidelines, history tools and all the other things your provided during your time with us here at Ackerman."
"Thank you for helping me be me and thank you for being a one of a kind best of yourself--I am not a victim, I am victorious!"
In conclusion, this was a learning experience for all of us.  I feel grateful for the opportunity.
